About Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is one of the largest game reserves in the world at approximately 52,800 square kilometres — larger than Switzerland and twice the size of the Serengeti. Originally established in 1961 to protect the traditional territory of the San Bushmen and the wildlife they depended upon, the CKGR offers a desert safari experience of vast, minimalist beauty that stands in stark contrast to the water-rich Okavango Delta.

The reserve's landscape is dominated by fossil river valleys — the Deception Valley, Passarge Valley, Letiahau Valley, and Sunday Pan — ancient watercourses that last flowed thousands of years ago but still collect enough moisture to support sweet grasses that attract grazing herds after the summer rains. During the green season (December-April), the valleys come alive with springbok, gemsbok, hartebeest, eland, and wildebeest, followed by black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetah, leopard, and brown hyena. The CKGR's lions are among the most photogenic in Africa — large-bodied males with magnificent dark manes set against golden grassland.

The Central Kalahari's appeal lies in its remoteness and wildness. Visitor numbers are negligible, and it is entirely possible to spend a full day driving without encountering another vehicle. Night skies in the CKGR are among the darkest and most star-filled in Southern Africa. Cultural interactions with San Bushmen communities, who have inhabited the Kalahari for at least 20,000 years, provide insights into one of humanity's oldest surviving cultures — their tracking skills, knowledge of medicinal plants, and spiritual connection to the land are humbling and deeply moving.
