Makgadikgadi Pans — sleep under stars on the salt flats

Step beyond the well-trodden safari circuits and into the raw, untamed heart of the Kalahari — one of the world's great desert ecosystems and a landscape that stirs the soul. This 6-day adventure explores two of Botswana's most enigmatic wilderness areas: the Makgadikgadi Pans, a vast expanse of shimmering white salt flats that stretch to the horizon, and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the second-largest game reserve in the world. At Makgadikgadi, walk alongside habituated meerkats as they emerge from their burrows at dawn, sleep under a canopy of stars on the pans themselves, and learn ancient survival techniques from San Bushmen whose ancestors have lived in this landscape for over 20,000 years. During the green season, witness one of Africa's least-known great migrations as vast herds of zebra and wildebeest traverse the pans. In the Central Kalahari, track desert-adapted predators — black-maned Kalahari lions, brown hyenas, and cheetahs — across golden grasslands dotted with ancient fossil riverbeds. The vast open spaces, dramatic skies, and profound silence of the Kalahari offer a safari experience entirely different from the lush delta or the game-rich savannah. This is Botswana stripped back to its primal essence — wild, remote, and deeply moving. Accommodation ranges from luxury desert camps to authentic mobile bush camps, ensuring comfort while maintaining the spirit of adventure.

Itinerary

Your Journey, Day by Day

6 carefully curated days across Makgadikgadi Pans, Central Kalahari Game Reserve

01

Day 1

Maun to Makgadikgadi Pans

Depart Maun after breakfast and drive east toward the Makgadikgadi Pans, crossing the vast grasslands of the Kalahari. Arrive at your luxury desert camp on the edge of Ntwetwe Pan by early afternoon. After settling in and a light lunch, head out for a late afternoon quad biking adventure across the endless white expanse of the salt pan. The flat, featureless landscape plays tricks with perspective, and the sense of space is overwhelming. As the sun sets, stop for drinks on the pan itself, watching the sky turn through every shade of pink, orange, and violet before a blanket of stars emerges overhead.

Day 2

Meerkat Walk & San Bushman Experience

Rise before dawn and walk out to the meerkat burrows near camp. As the sun warms the earth, habituated meerkat families emerge, using you as a lookout post while they forage for scorpions and beetles. Watching these charismatic creatures go about their morning routine just centimetres from your feet is a truly magical experience. Return for breakfast, then spend the morning with San Bushman trackers who demonstrate ancient hunting and gathering techniques — from setting snares to finding water in a seemingly barren landscape. The afternoon brings a game drive through the grasslands surrounding the pans, looking for gemsbok, springbok, and brown hyena.

Makgadikgadi to Central Kalahari Game Reserve

After a morning game drive and brunch at camp, transfer overland to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR). The drive crosses remote desert terrain, and your guide will share insights into the geology and ecology of the Kalahari along the way. Arrive at your camp in the CKGR in the late afternoon and settle into your tented accommodation. A sunset game drive through the ancient Deception Valley fossil riverbed introduces you to the unique Kalahari ecosystem, where desert-adapted species thrive in harsh conditions.

Day 4

Full Day Central Kalahari — Desert Predators

A full day exploring the vast Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The morning game drive targets the iconic black-maned Kalahari lions — larger and darker than their savannah cousins, perfectly adapted to this arid environment. Track cheetahs sprinting across the open pans and watch for brown hyenas skulking through the scrub. The CKGR is also home to endangered wild dogs, though sightings require patience and luck. After a bush lunch in the shade of a shepherd's tree, the afternoon drive explores the Passarge Valley, another ancient fossil riverbed that attracts concentrations of wildlife, particularly during the green season.

Central Kalahari — Deep Wilderness Exploration

Continue exploring the remote reaches of the CKGR with an extended morning game drive. Visit Piper's Pan, a seasonal waterhole that attracts massive herds of springbok, wildebeest, and gemsbok — and the predators that follow them. Your guide shares ecological insights about how this seemingly harsh landscape supports such diversity of life. The afternoon walk focuses on the smaller wonders of the desert: chameleons, barking geckos, antlions, and the incredible array of insects and reptiles that form the foundation of the Kalahari food web. Enjoy a farewell dinner under one of the darkest, most star-filled skies in Africa.
