Walking between bush camps in pristine wilderness
For the safari purist, there is no experience more authentic or exhilarating than walking in the African bush — and Zambia's Luangwa Valley is where the walking safari was born. This 7-day itinerary takes you deep into both South and North Luangwa National Parks on foot, walking between remote bush camps in the company of some of Africa's most experienced walking guides. The journey begins in South Luangwa, where game drives and introductory walks acclimatise you to the bush. Then comes the real adventure: a charter flight to North Luangwa, one of Africa's most remote and least-visited national parks. Here, with no permanent roads and virtually no other visitors, you walk through pristine wilderness that has remained unchanged for millennia. Your route follows the Mwaleshi River, crossing open floodplains where buffalo herds graze, threading through miombo woodland where elephants browse, and camping on the riverbank where lion roars echo through the night. Each day's walk covers 10-15 kilometres at a relaxed pace, with frequent stops to observe wildlife, identify tracks, and learn about the ecosystem from your guide. Accommodation alternates between comfortable bush camps and lightweight mobile fly camps set up by your walking crew, who travel ahead each day. The sense of freedom and connection to nature is profound — this is how the first humans experienced the African bush, and walking here reconnects you to that ancient heritage. This safari requires reasonable fitness and an adventurous spirit, but rewards with an experience that is utterly unique in the world of modern travel.

Your Journey, Day by Day
7 carefully curated days across South Luangwa, North Luangwa
Day 1
Lusaka to South Luangwa — Acclimatisation
Fly from Lusaka to Mfuwe Airport and transfer to your luxury bush camp in South Luangwa National Park. Settle in and enjoy lunch overlooking the Luangwa River. The afternoon features an introductory game drive to acclimatise you to the Luangwa ecosystem — its wildlife, terrain, and rhythms. Expect encounters with elephant herds, Thornicroft's giraffe, and the park's famous leopards. Your walking guide briefs you on the days ahead, covering safety protocols, what to carry, and what to expect from the walking experience. Dinner and an early night in preparation for the adventure to come.
Day 2
South Luangwa — First Walking Safari
Your walking safari begins in South Luangwa with a dawn walk along the Luangwa River. Single file behind your armed guide, you learn to move quietly through the bush, reading the signs that reveal the presence of wildlife all around you. Fresh hippo tracks in the mud, a leopard's scrape on a tree trunk, the alarm call of a startled francolin — every detail tells a story. The walk covers approximately 8 kilometres and includes a shaded rest stop where your guide shares ecological insights. Return to camp for brunch and relaxation. The afternoon game drive targets South Luangwa's famed predators before a final dinner at this camp.
Day 3
Charter Flight to North Luangwa
After a morning walk in South Luangwa, transfer to the airstrip for a charter flight to North Luangwa National Park — one of Africa's most remote and untouched wilderness areas. The flight crosses vast, uninhabited miombo woodland before landing at a bush strip near the Mwaleshi River. Transfer to your first North Luangwa camp, set in a grove of ebony trees overlooking the river. The sense of remoteness is immediate and profound — there are no other camps, no vehicles, and no other visitors. An afternoon walk along the Mwaleshi introduces you to the North Luangwa ecosystem.
Day 4
North Luangwa — Deep Wilderness Walking
A full day of walking in North Luangwa's pristine wilderness. The morning walk follows the Mwaleshi River upstream, crossing open floodplains where massive buffalo herds graze and hippos rest in the shallow pools. Your guide points out fresh lion tracks in the sand — the park's lion population, while not large, is completely wild and unhabituated, making encounters all the more thrilling. The walk covers approximately 12 kilometres, arriving at a mobile fly camp that your crew has set up on a scenic bend of the river. The fly camp is simple but comfortable — lightweight tents, bucket showers, and meals cooked over an open fire. Fall asleep to the sound of the river and the distant calls of hyenas.
Day 5
Fly Camp to Fly Camp — The Walking Odyssey
Today's walk is the heart of the expedition. Depart the fly camp after breakfast and walk through varied terrain — miombo woodland, dry river crossings, and open dambos (grassland clearings) that attract concentrations of wildlife. Elephants are frequently encountered at close range on foot, and your guide's skill at reading their body language ensures safe, exhilarating encounters. The midday bush lunch is served in the shade of a massive sausage tree, before the walk continues to the next fly camp on a different stretch of the Mwaleshi. The sense of journeying through truly wild Africa — where your footprints are the only human marks — is profoundly moving.
Day 6
Final Walk & Return to Mwaleshi Camp
The final walking day brings you back downstream to the main Mwaleshi Camp. The morning walk follows a different route, exploring a side valley where rare Cookson's wildebeest (endemic to the Luangwa Valley) graze alongside puku and impala. Cross the Mwaleshi at a shallow ford, watching for the glint of crocodile eyes in the deeper pools. Arrive at Mwaleshi Camp by lunchtime for a hot shower — the luxury of running water has never felt so good after two nights of fly camping. The afternoon is spent at leisure by the river, reflecting on the walking journey. The farewell dinner celebrates the extraordinary achievement of walking through one of Africa's last great wilderness areas.
Day 7
North Luangwa to Lusaka — Departure
A gentle sunrise walk around the camp perimeter provides a final immersion in the North Luangwa bush. Listen to the dawn chorus, watch the light change over the river, and say goodbye to a wilderness that few people will ever have the privilege to experience. After breakfast, transfer to the bush airstrip for your charter flight back to Mfuwe, connecting to Lusaka. Arrive in Lusaka with time for lunch before your onward journey. Depart Zambia transformed — the walking safari experience changes how you see the natural world forever.
