North Luangwa National Park

North Luangwa National Park covers 4,636 square kilometres in the remote northern section of the Luangwa Valley, separated from its more famous southern neighbour by a 50-kilometre gap of Game Management Area. Where South Luangwa has developed a sophisticated safari infrastructure, North Luangwa remains one of the most pristine and challenging wilderness areas in Africa — a park that can only be visited on foot, where vehicle game drives are not permitted and the only access is by light aircraft or a gruelling multi-hour 4x4 track.

North Luangwa is the ultimate walking safari destination. Multi-day walking expeditions, typically lasting 4-6 days, traverse the park with mobile fly camps moved ahead by porters, following ancient game trails along the Mwaleshi River and through mopane and miombo woodland. The walking experience here is fundamentally different from South Luangwa's day walks: guests are fully immersed in the bush for days at a time, sleeping in simple fly camps under mosquito nets, washing in the river, and developing a rhythm of movement attuned to the wildlife around them.

The Frankfurt Zoological Society has managed North Luangwa's conservation programme since 1986, successfully reintroducing black rhinoceros (approximately 40 individuals as of recent counts) to a park from which they had been poached to extinction. The park's buffalo population is enormous — estimated at over 30,000 individuals — and these herds attract large lion prides and spotted hyena clans. The Mwaleshi River, clear and fast-flowing through a granite gorge, is one of the most beautiful rivers in Zambia. North Luangwa is not for everyone — it demands physical fitness, tolerance for basic conditions, and a genuine love of walking — but for those who accept its challenge, it delivers the most authentic wilderness experience in Africa.
